I sensed a glow and looked up coyly.
Towering over me, a beaming smile bursting with quiet contentment and amused delight met my eyes. It was a whole person smile, not one of those half-hearted toothy efforts that vanish the minute the camera has been put away. This, I thought, is the genuine article. What's more, I could even be in the rare presence of a happy person. Alien alert!
I was to look up many more times over the next fortnight, coquettishly at first, then compulsively. A stolen glance here, another quick peek there, as if to ensure the smile hadn't faded or disappeared. Often, I'd actively seek the presence of the smile, for it had magical properties. One look at it and my worries would recede into the background, another look and I would start to relax. Eventually, I too would smile, engaging into that speechless communication process that spells out far more than words ever do.
During the day, the smile would often see me through difficult times. After hours, it became a source of lightheartedness and convoluted conversations, a repository of wit, quips and puns. Oh how I brazenly feasted my eyes on that smile, holding it still in my mind, letting it rub away all traces of sadness, pain, disappointment...
The smile spoke of secrets, stories and songs, it showed me how to laugh again, taught me about the past, its people and places.
It left in the middle of the night some weeks ago, but it still illuminates my dreams from a distance.

A smile is but a crack between two cheeks--and that is certainly not a bummer ;-)
Smiles are contagious. You just made me smile. Are you?
a smile can buy things that money never can.
A smile like this one can melt your heart.
Ooh but I do so love the power of smiles. If only some boffin could discover how to amplify the result we could spread that feeling everywhere.
Hey. Ain't this a happy post.
And hurray, Johnston has been returned.
And let me just tell you something, something that is 'duh'-like in its oservation but will observe anyway because it made me geekhappy early in the morning: Wifi is cool.
Cool - you got a new toilet
- and as if that wasn't funny enough, your word verification is asking me to enter.....
huarse
good job the fuckers can't spell eh?!!
Angie, here's a thought eh! Alas, the boffins are too busy working on warfare.
Karen, it is an unrestrainedly happy post, yes and as you said, hurray for freedom. And how right you are, I owe my life and happiness to wifi...
Goth, er, no, not mine but I have used it. Word verification has a sense of humour it seems!
A smile is worth an awful lot. And my word verification reads: jqzyspa
JACCUZZI SPA?
Nice to see a happy post!

Honey, I am just happy that life doesn't suck for a while.
I send you all the love I can spare
*Gothic hugs*
Goodness... yes, the smiles of others can be compelling, don't you think? Impossible to resist if they insist on bestowing them on us over an extended period of time.
is it god who's been smiling at you?
I'd be smiling too, you know, but I think you really should consider fixing that hole in the toilet roof...
"It was a whole person smile"
